Nepal is observing its 19th Republic Day with various programs, marking the historic decision of the first Constituent Assembly on May 28, 2008, to abolish the monarchy and declare the country a Federal Democratic Republic. The government has declared a public holiday for the occasion, with special events held in Kathmandu and other parts of the country. President Ram Chandra Paudel and Prime Minister Balen Shah are attending the main state ceremony at Tundikhel.
