Airports across Asia are on high alert following India's confirmation of two Nipah virus cases in West Bengal. The virus, which spreads from animals to humans and has a high fatality rate, has prompted screening measures in Thailand, Nepal, and Vietnam. While India reports timely containment with no further detected outbreaks among close contacts, the World Health Organization considers Nipah virus a high risk for epidemics due to the lack of a vaccine and its 40-75% fatality rate. Previous outbreaks have occurred across Asia since its first identification in Malaysia in 1998.
