Nepali mountaineer Pemba Sherpa, a kidney transplant recipient, has become the first known person to carry a photo banner of football icon Lionel Messi to the summit of Mount Everest. Sherpa, who reached the summit on May 13, 2025, was inspired by Messi's perseverance and hopes to gift the banner to the Argentine superstar. He underwent a kidney transplant in October 2022 and views his Everest ascent as a second chance at life, motivated by Messi's journey to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
