Nepal's transition to a republic followed the 2006 April Uprising, which led to the abolition of the monarchy in 2008. Factors contributing to the monarchy's end included King Gyanendra's autocratic rule, political party corruption, and the Maoist insurgency. Despite the establishment of a new constitution in 2015 and fundamental rights, corruption and lack of opportunities have led to youth dissatisfaction and protests. The Rastriya Swatantra Party, led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah, has recently gained power on a platform of good governance, signaling a new phase for the republican order.
