The traditional Jatari festival of the Dhimal community is undergoing changes, with modern foods replacing traditional offerings and a decline in traditional attire. Excessive spending during the two-month-long festival, estimated at over Rs. 30 million annually across 80 locations, has led to significant financial hardship, with some families becoming landless. Leaders note that while community members worship ancestors and nature for protection and good fortune, the continuous feasting, drinking, entertainment, and gambling associated with the festival are weakening traditional values and economically weakening the community.
