Photo · english.makalukhabar.com

A joint European-Chinese spacecraft, SMILE, was launched on a Vega-C rocket from French Guiana to investigate the interaction between solar winds and Earth's magnetic shield. The mission aims to make the first-ever X-ray observations of the Earth's magnetic field to better understand space weather.

  • The SMILE spacecraft lifted off at 0352 GMT and detached 55 minutes later at an altitude of 700 kilometers.
  • SMILE will travel to an elliptical orbit thousands of kilometers above Earth, reaching 5,000 kilometers over the South Pole and 121,000 kilometers over the North Pole.
  • The mission is a collaboration between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
  • Understanding space weather is crucial as fierce solar storms can disrupt satellites and threaten astronauts.
  • The spacecraft will transmit data to the Bernardo O’Higgins research station in Antarctica.
