The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Nepal has presented a special award to the Nepali Army in recognition of its nearly 50 years of contribution to nature and environmental conservation. The honor was conferred during WWF Nepal's 33rd anniversary celebration, acknowledging the army's significant role in wildlife and environmental protection.

  • The Nepali Army has been formally deployed for national park protection since 1975, currently safeguarding 12 national parks, one wildlife reserve, and one hunting reserve.
  • Six army units previously received the Abraham Conservation Award for contributing to Nepal achieving zero-poaching years between 2011 and 2019.
  • Conservation efforts have led to an increase in Nepal's tiger population from 121 in 2009 to 355, and one-horned rhinos from 400 in 2005 to 752.
  • Despite challenging conditions, 116 Nepali Army personnel have lost their lives while carrying out conservation duties.
  • Bardia National Park, a previous recipient of the Double Tiger Award, was also specially recognized during the event.

Eighteen trap cameras have been installed in the Samagaun and Samdo areas of the Manaslu Conservation Area in northern Gorkha to study increasing human-wildlife conflict. The initiative aims to identify the species and causes behind recent attacks on livestock like yaks and horses, which have led to significant economic losses for local farmers. Monitoring has begun in the first phase, with cameras placed in high-incidence areas.
