Narayani River Excavation Ordered Regulated Amidst Rampant Extraction

Photo · enewspolar.com

The District Monitoring Committee Nawalpur has directed authorities to regulate excavation works in the Narayani River, citing rampant extraction found during an on-site inspection. Committee coordinator Baburam Bishwakarma stated that river materials were being extracted arbitrarily, with digging deeper than permitted and in unapproved locations, despite previous suggestions for compliance. The situation continues to develop as improvements have not been observed.

  • More than the stipulated four excavators were found in use, with up to nine excavators and over 200 trippers reportedly involved daily, leading to excessive extraction.
  • Chief District Officer Bhabhishwor Pandey instructed that materials be transported without spilling water and that tippers be covered, suggesting CCTV monitoring for transportation.
  • Accurate records of transported river materials and invoices are to be maintained, and immediate measurement and verification of extracted materials are necessary.
  • Excavation was reportedly conducted by digging deeper pits than permitted and in areas not specified by environmental impact assessments.
  • Previous monitoring and suggestions for compliance had not resulted in satisfactory improvements within a week.

Eighteen trap cameras have been installed in the Samagaun and Samdo areas of the Manaslu Conservation Area in northern Gorkha to study increasing human-wildlife conflict.
