Elko City Council to open meeting with Hindu prayers for the first time

The Elko City Council in Nevada will commence its meeting on May 26 with an invocation of Hindu prayers, featuring verses from ancient Sanskrit scriptures. Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed will deliver the invocation, followed by an English interpretation of the prayers.

  • Rajan Zed, President of the Universal Society of Hinduism, will recite from the Rig-Veda, Upanishads, and Bhagavad-Gita.
  • The prayer will begin and end with "Om", a mystical syllable in Hinduism.
  • Zed plans to interpret the Sanskrit prayer "Asato ma sad gamaya, Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya, Mrtyor mamrtam gamaya" as "Lead us from the unreal to the real, Lead us from darkness to light, and Lead us from death to immortality."
  • He will also urge council members to prioritize the welfare of others, citing the Bhagavad-Gita.
