India's power producers have achieved a record in electricity generation as the nation experiences an intense heatwave, leading to a surge in power demand. The Ministry of Power reported that the country's peak power demand of 270.82 gigawatts was successfully met on Thursday, marking a new all-time high. This surge is attributed to increased usage of cooling appliances during the extreme temperatures.

  • Thursday marked the fourth consecutive day where peak power demand reached a new all-time high.
  • Temperatures in New Delhi reached 45.3C at the time the peak demand was recorded.
  • Thermal power, primarily coal, accounted for 62% of the generation, with solar at 22%.
  • Despite record generation, some residents reported power cuts in their districts.
  • The highest temperature recorded on Thursday was 47.6C in Banda, Uttar Pradesh.
