Traditional food could help reverse Nepal’s ‘diabetes epidemic’, studies suggest

Doctors suggest that a return to traditional Nepali lentil and rice dishes could help reverse a growing diabetes epidemic, which they attribute to the influx of western junk foods. A pilot study in Kathmandu involving 70 hospital patients showed 43% achieved remission of their diabetes by following a calorie-controlled traditional diet. Ongoing trials show similar promise, with around half of participants free from diabetes after four months. The approach, developed by the University of Glasgow in collaboration with Dhulikhel hospital, uses cheap, local ingredients and aims to prevent high-risk individuals from developing type 2 diabetes.
