Republic Day is being celebrated across Nepal today with various programs, and the government has declared a public holiday. The day commemorates the abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of a federal democratic republic system on Jestha 15, 2065 B.S. (May 28, 2008). President Ram Chandra Paudel will attend a special ceremony at the Army Pavilion in Tundikhel, Kathmandu, while Prime Minister Balendra (Balen) Shah has requested the President to deliver the address instead of the Prime Minister, a departure from custom.
