Rising climate risks push Hindu Kush into a disaster zone

Part of: Nepal Faces Worsening Climate Crisis: Extreme Heat, Unpredictable Weather, and Rising Disaster Risks

A new study by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) reveals that the Hindu Kush Himalayan region faces increased disaster risks due to climate change intensifying extreme weather events. The region is experiencing a rise in multi-hazard risks, where multiple types of disasters occur simultaneously or trigger each other. ICIMOD analyzed disaster events from sources like EM-DAT and found that in 2025, four countries in the region experienced over 10 major disaster events, including floods, landslides, and Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). The study highlights the vulnerability of dependent communities and emphasizes the need for continuous investment in preparedness and risk-based development plans.
