MP Baral urges higher tobacco tax to curb rising addiction

Opposition lawmaker Gurupasad Baral urged the government to increase tobacco taxes, citing that over 8.5 million people in Nepal are affected by tobacco consumption, with nearly 800,000 students and youths addicted. He highlighted that around 39,000 Nepalis die annually from tobacco-related illnesses and noted that Nepal's tobacco tax of 40 percent is lower than India's 58 percent and Bangladesh's 73 percent.
