Experts urge 55% tax hike on cigarette in upcoming budget

Experts have recommended a 55% increase in cigarette excise duty for the upcoming budget, along with annual tax hikes above inflation for all tobacco products, estimating an increase of Rs. 11-12 billion in government revenue and a reduction in tobacco use. They also suggested simplifying the tax structure and moving towards a uniform specific excise tax system. The World Health Organisation recommends tobacco excise duties up to 70% of retail price, a target Nepal is reportedly lagging behind.
