Sri Lanka expects record worker remittances in 2026
Sri Lanka is projected to record its highest-ever annual foreign worker remittances by the end of 2026. Remittances reached 3.06 billion U.S. dollars in the first four months of 2026, surpassing the previous record of 2.4 billion dollars in the same period of 2025. Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment Chairman Kosala Wickramasinghe attributed this increase to higher basic salaries for migrant workers, improved international recognition of the foreign employment sector, and expanded welfare facilities. Remittances continue to rise despite conflicts in the Middle East, a key destination for Sri Lankan workers, and are a significant source of foreign revenue for the country.
