Egg Prices Surge Due to Heat-Induced Production Drop, Farmers Cite Rising Costs

Photo · english.nepalnews.com

Egg prices in Nepal have increased as production declines due to intense summer heat, according to the Nepal Layers Poultry Farmers Association. The association has raised support prices for eggs, with large eggs now Rs 515 per crate and medium eggs Rs 485 per crate at the farm level, while consumer prices are set at Rs 25 per egg. Farmers are struggling to recover production costs, which stand at Rs 19.12 per egg.

  • Increased market demand, partly driven by higher tourism during recent public holidays, is also contributing to the price hike.
  • Poultry farmers are facing additional challenges including labor shortages and outbreaks of infection among chickens, further reducing supply.
  • Many poultry farmers have been exiting the business in recent years due to low returns, falling production, disease outbreaks, and increasing bank loans.
  • Previously, large eggs were priced at Rs 485 and medium eggs at Rs 435 per crate at the farm level.
