Jumla Sees Decline in Health Insurance Renewals Amidst Policy Changes and Service Issues

Photo · risingnepaldaily.com

Health insurance renewals are declining in Jumla district, with nearly 56,000 individuals not renewing their policies, according to the Health Insurance Board. This decrease is partly attributed to the government discontinuing its free renewal policy for extremely poor families, while issues like medicine shortages and hospital claim delays are also cited as contributing factors by local residents.

  • Over 103,000 individuals from 14,885 households were initially insured, but only 44,479 policies remain active.
  • 17,312 people from extremely poor households did not renew their insurance after the government ended its free renewal policy for this group.
  • The government continues to offer free health insurance for people with disabilities, leprosy patients, those with HIV, and senior citizens.
  • Local residents point to a lack of medicines in hospitals, long waiting times, and unpaid insurance claims by hospitals as reasons for lower renewals.
  • The health insurance program was introduced in Jumla in 2017, and the Board is initiating door-to-door visits to encourage participation.
