Psychiatrist Francesco Panto is trialing anime avatar-based counseling as a novel therapy method for depression in Japan, aiming to help individuals who struggle with traditional forms of help. The pilot study involved 20 participants aged 18-29 who received online counseling from a psychologist using a digitally altered anime avatar. Panto believes the "filter of fantasy" can ease patients and facilitate problem recognition.

  • The six-month pilot study, named "character-based counselling," concluded in March at Yokohama City University.
  • Participants chose from six distinct anime avatars, each designed with specific archetypes and infused with particular mental struggles like bipolar disorder, PTSD, anxiety, or alcohol use problems.
  • Panto, who found personal refuge in anime during his youth in Sicily, believes these characters can serve as important emotional support tools.
  • The therapy utilizes avatars with digitally altered voices to create a more comfortable and relatable therapeutic environment.
