Pokhara Metropolitan City has begun demolishing approximately 160 permanent and temporary structures built within the Firke Khola stream corridor. The eviction campaign, launched from the Zero Kilometer area, aims to restore the natural flow of the eight-kilometer stream that passes through multiple wards before emptying into Phewa Lake. A 35-day notice for residents to vacate the area expired on Saturday, with demolition work commencing on Sunday.

  • The demolition targets structures built directly over the stream, starting from Adherikuna, Firkepul Budhanilkantha Temple area, and the Lions Club building area.
  • A survey report from June 2023 identified structures encroaching on the stream corridor, and Pokhara Metropolitan City has set a standard width of six meters for Firke Khola.
  • Pokhara Metropolitan City Mayor Dhanraj Acharya initiated the campaign, emphasizing the immediate need to clear the stream corridor, stating that houses should not be built over the stream.
  • The metropolitan city plans to manage settlements of landless squatters while removing other encroaching structures.
  • The Firke Khola stream flows through Wards No. 2, 18, 4, 5, 7, 8, 6, and 17 of Pokhara.
