Kathmandu Murals Deteriorate Due to Neglect and Vandalism

Photo · english.onlinekhabar.com

Millions of rupees worth of murals commissioned by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City are deteriorating due to a lack of preservation and maintenance. Dust from construction, spitting of paan and gutkha, and vandalism have damaged the artworks, with the Sundhara area murals suffering the most. The Nepal Academy of Fine Arts, responsible for the murals, claims maintenance was not part of its agreement, while the metropolis argues otherwise.

  • Murals were painted in public spaces including Maitighar to Babarmahal, Exhibition Road, outside the international airport, Lainchaur, Sundhara, Padma Kanya Campus, and Tripureshwor.
  • The Kathmandu Metropolitan City allocated Rs 5 million to the Nepal Academy of Fine Arts for the mural project.
  • The Nepal Academy of Fine Arts states that the agreement signed in February/March 2024 did not include maintenance responsibilities.
  • The murals are also damaged by cracked walls and scribbled vandalism.
  • The academy was responsible for agreements, work orders, evaluations, payments, and accountability for the murals.
