Nepal has become an unlikely electric vehicle pioneer, with EVs making up 73% of new passenger car sales in 2025 due to high taxes on petrol cars and cheap electricity. However, the country's infrastructure, including roads, grids, and public transport, has not kept pace with the EV boom. While charging points are increasing, grid capacity is seasonal, and public transport remains fragmented. The government's tax policy, while reducing fossil fuel imports, has led to increased car ownership and congestion without complementary measures like congestion charges or public transit investment.
