Chitwan National Park sees rise in domestic tourists, decline in foreign visitors

Chitwan National Park has experienced a significant increase in domestic tourist arrivals while foreign tourist numbers have decreased during the current fiscal year. According to park officials, the decline in foreign visitors may be attributed to political developments in Nepal and conflicts in the Middle East, while domestic travel has been boosted by factors like increased Nepalis traveling and a government-introduced two-day weekend.

  • As of mid-April of the current fiscal year, Chitwan National Park has recorded 226,876 domestic and foreign tourists, surpassing last year's full-year total of 231,329 with two months remaining.
  • Domestic tourist numbers rose to 137,246 this fiscal year, an increase of 33,574 from the previous year, while foreign visitors dropped to 89,630 from 100,830.
  • Specifically, SAARC country tourist arrivals decreased by 4,941 and visitors from other countries fell by 6,259 compared to the previous year.
  • The park has collected Rs 235.5 million in revenue so far this fiscal year from various sources including firewood sales and forest products.
  • Activities such as elephant safaris, jeep safaris, jungle walks, and boating are popular attractions for visitors to the park.
