Chaudandigadhi Municipality Distributes Land Ownership Certificates to Landless Residents

Photo · risingnepaldaily.com

Chaudandigadhi Municipality has begun distributing temporary land ownership certificates to landless Dalits, squatters, and unmanaged settlers to address long-standing land ownership issues. Mayor Kaluman Lama distributed these certificates to 65 households in Ward No. 8, who have occupied government and unmanaged land for decades. This initiative aims to manage and regularize settlements, providing residents with a sense of recognition and hope for permanent settlement rights.

  • The municipality launched the initiative shortly after the government issued a directive to clear houses built on public land.
  • The temporary certificates were issued after field studies, monitoring, land measurement, record verification, and map preparation, requiring proof of at least 10 years of land occupation.
  • Some families in Chaudandigadhi have occupied land since 1971 BS without ownership certificates, living in fear of eviction.
  • Mayor Lama stated that land-related problems in Nepal are old and complex, with many migrants living on government, public, and forest land for decades without legal recognition.
  • The certificates provide a sense of recognition for residents who have occupied and used the land for generations.
