Shantinagar eviction displaces families, leaving them in uncertainty

Photo · english.ratopati.com

Authorities demolished the Shantinagar squatter settlement in Kathmandu, displacing families who had lived there for years. Among those affected is Lal Bahadur Limbu, who, along with his family, is now residing in a temporary holding center in Banepa, facing an uncertain future after their homes were destroyed with little notice.

  • The Shantinagar settlement, previously a dense community with tin-roofed huts and bamboo structures, has been reduced to ruins following the eviction.
  • Residents were given only a few days' notice before bulldozers arrived to clear the settlement on 12 Baisakh 2083 BS.
  • Lal Bahadur Limbu, a 64-year-old resident, moved to Kathmandu in 2057 BS after working as a laborer in Pokhara and previously living in Sunsari.
  • Families like Limbu's are now sharing space in temporary shelters, struggling to rebuild their lives without permanent housing.
