The Office of the Auditor General has instructed the Shree Bouddhanath Area Development Committee to properly preserve research and study records concerning the Bouddhanath area. This directive comes amidst ongoing disputes between the Committee and the Buddha and Melamchi Ghyang Guthi regarding the management of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed site, which has impeded development.

  • The Committee has failed to establish a mechanism for digitally preserving or scientifically archiving annual research materials on Buddhist heritage in the Bouddhanath area.
  • The Shree Bouddhanath Area Development Committee is mandated to protect social, economic, cultural, and archaeological heritage associated with Buddhism in the Bouddhanath Stupa area.
  • Disagreements between the Committee and the Guthi have hindered the development of infrastructures capable of attracting more foreign tourists.
  • The Bouddhanath area is located eight kilometers east of downtown Kathmandu district.
