Canada confirms first hantavirus case in cruise passenger; three deaths reported

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has confirmed the country's first hantavirus case in a cruise passenger who is currently isolating in British Columbia. The outbreak occurred aboard the polar expedition cruise ship MV Hondius, which has reported three deaths.

  • Samples from British Columbia were sent to PHAC's National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg for confirmatory testing, with one sample confirmed positive on Saturday.
  • A travelling partner of the confirmed case tested negative, and no additional cases have been identified so far.
  • PHAC stated that all high-risk contacts are isolating and being monitored, assessing the overall risk to the Canadian population as low.
  • The incubation period for hantavirus typically ranges from one to eight weeks.
