Hadiya Real Tea Estate in Jhapa has pioneered the simultaneous commercial cultivation of tea and areca nut on 60 bighas of land. Estate operator Bhakti Adhikari stated that the mixed cultivation is feasible due to the similar climate and soil requirements of both crops, with the areca nut trees providing beneficial shade for the tea bushes. This initiative marks the first institutionalized intercropping of these two cash crops by a commercial company in Jhapa.

  • The company is cultivating tea and areca nut together on 60 bighas of land in Bhadrapur Municipality Wards 8 and 9.
  • Bhakti Adhikari, the estate operator, noted that the tall areca nut trees offer light shade essential for tea bushes, allowing for double benefits from the same land and investment.
  • Tea saplings were planted about a decade ago, with areca nut saplings added three years ago; the areca nut is expected to yield in four more years.
  • The company plans to expand areca nut cultivation as intercropping within its total 102 bighas of tea garden.
  • The idea for mixed cultivation was inspired by a visit to Assam, India, where high-quality areca nut seeds were sourced.
