AI-powered drones have been deployed for forest patrolling in Mustang for the first time, marking a significant shift from previous videography uses. The Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) introduced this technology to monitor protected forests, wildlife, and curb unauthorized activities, particularly during the Yarsagumba harvesting season. This initiative aims to address the challenges of monitoring Mustang's difficult geography and remote terrains.

  • The AI drones are specifically utilized for wildlife and forest surveillance, including curbing poaching and tracking unauthorized activities.
  • The technology is being deployed to prevent illegal activities by Yarsagumba collectors and reduce the risk of forest fires.
  • The drones weigh 1,063 grams, have a flight range of 15 to 20 kilometers, and can reach altitudes of up to six kilometers.
  • Patrols have been conducted in specific areas such as Lupra Lenk in Waragung Muktikshetra Rural Municipality–1, and Bhrapsa and Namkhu Lenk in Gharapjhong Rural Municipality.
