Heavy Rainfall Triggers Landslides, Disrupting Road Networks Across Nepal

Photo · english.ratopati.com

Continuous heavy rainfall and natural disasters have caused widespread disruptions to vehicular movement on major highways across Nepal, including in Karnali, Gandaki, and Bagmati provinces. Landslides and flood risks have completely blocked key routes such as the Karnali Corridor in Kalikot and the Mid-Hill Highway in Lamjung, while authorities have suspended traffic on the BP Highway due to flood threats. In some affected areas, emergency workers have cleared debris to allow for temporary, one-way traffic.

  • Landslides have completely obstructed the Karnali Corridor in Kalikot and the Mid-Hill Highway in Lamjung's Bimirebhanjyang, with traffic halted since Jestha 8 and Jestha 4 respectively.
  • Vehicular movement has been stopped on the Hilsa-Simkot road section in Humla since Baisakh 29 due to landslide risks, and on the Khurkot-Nepalthok-Katunjebesi section of the BP Highway since Baisakh 22 due to flood threats.
  • The Koshi Highway in Makalu, Sankhuwasabha, the Mid-Hill Highway in Bhojpur, and the Beni-Jomsom road section in Myagdi are operating on one-way traffic following clearance of landslide debris.
  • In Panchthar district, landslides have displaced four families, destroyed homes, and damaged infrastructure including suspension and road bridges, with a bridge over the Mewa River on the Pushpalal Mid-Hill Highway being washed away.
