More than 17,000 people were under evacuation orders in Southern California as the wind-driven Sandy Fire threatened suburban homes in Simi Valley. The fire consumed dry brush and destroyed at least one home, with firefighters aided by calmer winds overnight. Crews hoped to make further progress before winds increased again, and the fire was 5% contained. Separately, firefighters were battling a blaze on Santa Rosa Island, which destroyed a cabin and an equipment shed and forced the evacuation of National Park Service employees.
