The construction of the Kathmandu–Terai/Madhesh Expressway is facing significant delays, primarily due to unresolved disputes in the Khokana section concerning compensation, archaeological sites, and Guthi land. Despite overall physical progress reaching 46.88 percent, substantial work remains pending with only about 11 months left until the revised March 2026 deadline. Infrastructure expert Arjun Jung Thapa estimates an additional three years are needed for completion, citing issues with weak contractors and logistical challenges, especially during the monsoon. The government is considering alternatives for the Khokana section, including revising the Detailed Project Report (DPR) to potentially shift the toll plaza and construct a bridge at Pharsidole, but the process is stalled due to bureaucratic procedures and a change in government.
