Nepal's National Investigation Department Moved Back Under Prime Minister's Office

The Nepal government has once again placed the National Investigation Department (NID) under the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers. This administrative shift was approved through the endorsement of the Government of Nepal Allocation of Business Rules 2026, expanding the Prime Minister's Office's jurisdiction to oversee 48 agencies.

  • The move reinstates a structure previously implemented by former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in 2018.
  • The NID was previously under the Ministry of Home Affairs, having been moved there by the government led by former Prime Minister Sushila Karki.
  • The decision to place the NID under the Prime Minister's Office was made through the Nepal Government (Work Division) Regulations.
  • This restructuring brings back a system that had been in place before subsequent governments reassigned departments to their respective ministries.
