Middle East Conflict Disrupts Fertilizer Supply for Monsoon Paddy Season

Photo · enewspolar.com

The ongoing conflict in West Asia has disrupted the timely delivery of approximately 185,000 tonnes of chemical fertilizer already under contract, raising concerns for Nepal's monsoon paddy planting season. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forests and Environment is implementing alternative measures to manage potential supply shortages and ensure availability for farmers. Current stock is expected to meet demand until mid-July 2026, with daily distribution ranging from 500 to 2,500 tonnes.

  • The ministry is working to import additional fertilizer quantities before mid-July 2026 to prevent further shortages.
  • Approximately 145,000 tonnes of chemical fertilizer are currently in stock with the Agriculture Inputs Company Limited and Salt Trading Corporation.
  • The ministry has stated that the price of fertilizers has increased compared to the previous year due to the conflict.
  • Around 245,000 tonnes of chemical fertilizer are required for the five-month period from mid-May to mid-October, based on previous year's demand.
  • Joint Secretary Dr. Ram Krishna Shrestha expressed confidence that 491,000 metric tons of fertilizers will arrive once the obstruction in the Strait of Hormuz is lifted.
