The Nepali government has introduced the Energy Consumption Growth and Export Strategy, 2083, aiming to eliminate subsidies for Liquefied Petroleum (LP) gas by the fiscal year 2092/93. This strategy involves providing subsidies for electric stoves to encourage clean energy consumption and reduce the significant costs associated with LP gas imports.

  • The strategy, prepared by the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, seeks to gradually reduce and minimize the use of cooking LPG gas.
  • The Department of Customs reported that Nepal imported cooking gas worth Rs 41.65 billion in the first nine months of the current fiscal year, totaling 4.1 million metric tons.
  • The Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) incurs a loss of Rs 331.25 per cylinder of LPG sold at Rs 2,160.
  • The Ministry of Industry is designated as the responsible agency for implementing the plan, with coordination from the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Energy.
  • The Nepal Electricity Authority has already launched a campaign to promote the use of electric cooking stoves, with local governments also supporting the initiative.
