Snakebite Cases Surge in Sarlahi Amidst Rising Temperatures and Monsoon

Photo · risingnepaldaily.com

Snakebite cases are increasing in Sarlahi district due to rising temperatures and the monsoon season, overwhelming local health facilities. The Nawalpur Snakebite Treatment Centre reports that patients often arrive too late for effective treatment, leading to fatalities, particularly due to the lack of ICU and ventilator support. Critically ill patients are frequently referred to other cities or even India for advanced care.

  • Treatment for snakebites is currently limited to anti-snake venom administration at Provincial Hospital Malangwa, Primary Health Centre Barhathawa, and the Nawalpur Snakebite Treatment Centre.
  • The absence of ICU and ventilator facilities at these centres means that patients in critical condition often cannot be treated effectively.
  • Shortages in skilled manpower and financial constraints have left ICU and ventilator units at the Nawalpur Snakebite Treatment Centre and Provincial Hospital Malangwa unused.
  • A three-year-old boy, Aditya Giri, recently died from a venomous snakebite after arriving late for treatment.
  • Patients in critical condition are often referred to Bardibas, Janakpur, or India for further treatment.
