Over 61 % Nepalis drink water polluted with E. coli

The National Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey 2024-25 reveals that only 40% of people have access to safely managed sanitation and 47% to safe drinking water, with 61% drinking E. coli contaminated water. The survey, conducted by the National Statistics Office with UNICEF support, highlights significant provincial and socioeconomic disparities, indicating a need for accelerated progress to meet 2030 SDG targets. Sanitation access has decreased by 22 points since 2019, and while safe drinking water access has increased, substantial acceleration is still required to meet the 2030 target.
