Nepal Prepares for Monsoon: Over 226,000 Expected to be Affected

Nepal's Monsoon Preparedness and Response National Action Plan estimates over 226,000 people could be affected by monsoon-related disasters this year, with projections similar to 2014, 2016, and 2022. The plan highlights risks including floods, landslides, and heatwaves, particularly affecting vulnerable groups like the elderly. The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology warns that despite predictions of a weaker monsoon, localized intense rainfall and thunderstorms could still increase disaster risks.

  • The action plan estimates 51,868 households, or 226,661 people, may be impacted by monsoon-induced disasters nationwide.
  • Vulnerable groups identified as most at risk include 47,000 senior citizens, 18,000 children under five, 4,900 persons with disabilities, and 4,500 women of reproductive age.
  • Rising average temperatures could increase risks in high-altitude regions, including glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), and intensified flooding and landslides downstream.
  • The southern Terai plains may experience increased likelihood of heatwaves and extreme heat conditions during the monsoon period.
  • The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has forecast below-average rainfall in most parts of the country this monsoon season.
