The Supreme Court has ordered the release of former minister Raj Kumar Gupta on a bail amount of Rs 5 million in a corruption case related to alleged bribery for transfers of land revenue officials. The apex court overturned a Special Court decision that had kept Gupta in judicial custody pending trial. In a separate development, the Supreme Court has also sought an explanation regarding the arrest of medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai.

  • The Supreme Court's order allows Gupta to be released upon furnishing the Rs 5 million bail, a bank guarantee of equivalent value, or property collateral.
  • The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) had accused Gupta of accepting bribes to facilitate transfers and appointments within land revenue offices.
  • The Supreme Court also upheld the Special Court's earlier decision to grant bail to other defendants in the case, including Ranjita Shrestha.
  • The court's decision regarding Gupta was issued by a division bench of Justices Sharanga Subedi and Sunil Kumar Pokharel.
