Nepal's smartphone imports have surpassed the total value of the previous fiscal year within the first 10 months of fiscal year 2025/26, reaching Rs. 39.39 billion. This surge, driven by increased demand for higher-priced devices and currency depreciation, has also led to a significant rise in customs revenue.

  • Smartphone imports increased by 36.7% in value and 4.38% in quantity compared to the same period last fiscal year.
  • The government collected Rs. 7.34 billion in customs revenue from smartphone imports during the review period, exceeding the entire previous fiscal year's collection.
  • The import value has exceeded the previous fiscal year's total by approximately Rs. 3.85 billion within just 10 months.
  • Consumers are increasingly opting for more expensive smartphone models, contributing to the higher import bill.
  • Smartphones are being imported from nearly 60 countries, with China being a dominant source.
