Patarasi Rural Municipality Works to End Menstrual Hut Practice

Photo · risingnepaldaily.com

Women in Patarasi Rural Municipality of Jumla are gradually abandoning the tradition of staying in menstrual huts (chhuigoth) during their periods, opting instead to stay safely inside their homes. The local government and stakeholders are supporting this initiative, with preparations underway to declare Ward No. 1 a “Chhuigoth-Free Ward.” This effort aims to improve women's health, dignity, and safety, as the practice has been linked to mental stress, fear, humiliation, and health issues.

  • Ward Nos. 2, 4, and 5 of Patarasi Rural Municipality have already been declared free of the chhuigoth practice, with efforts ongoing for the remaining wards.
  • A team comprising the Rural Municipality Vice-Chair, education and health officials, ward chairpersons, and stakeholders is conducting field monitoring in settlements.
  • Community groups like the Laligurans Mothers’ Group and organizations such as Sarvodaya Nepal are actively involved in awareness campaigns and empowering local women.
  • Vice-Chair Janamaya Rokaya stated that the Chhaupadi practice has seriously affected women’s health, dignity, and safety.
  • The municipality's ultimate goal is to declare Patarasi Rural Municipality entirely free of chhuigoth.
