Reconstruction has officially commenced on a severely damaged 3.2-kilometer section of Nepal's BP Highway, linking Kavrepalanchok and Sindhuli districts, with financial and technical assistance from Japan. Japanese Ambassador Maeda Toru and Nepal's Infrastructure Ministry Secretary Gopal Prasad Sigdel jointly laid the foundation stone for the Piple–Barkhekhola stretch, which was devastated by floods and landslides in October 2024.

  • The reconstruction of the Piple–Barkhekhola section is being carried out by Japan-based Shimizu Corporation under a bilateral agreement.
  • Japan has pledged grant assistance worth 2.8 billion Japanese yen for the project, which aims to improve climate resilience and reduce future disaster risks.
  • Approximately 30 kilometers of the BP Highway across Kavrepalanchok and Sindhuli districts require repair and reconstruction due to flood-related damage.
  • The BP Highway, officially known as the Banepa-Bardibas Highway, is a major trade and transport corridor connecting Kathmandu with Nepal’s eastern plains.
  • The project includes widening damaged sections into two-lane roads and upgrading bridges.
