The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) plans to construct an 11.92 km, 132-kV underground transmission line in central Kathmandu to ensure reliable electricity distribution within the Ring Road area and enhance urban aesthetics. The project, expected to be completed within three years, will connect Balaju Substation to Singha Durbar via Maharajgunj and Ratna Park, and will also include the construction of several new substations.

  • The transmission line will feature a double-circuit system capable of transmitting up to 350 megawatts of electricity.
  • New substations are planned, including 132/11 kV facilities in Maharajgunj and Ratna Park, and a 132/66/11 kV substation in Singha Durbar.
  • The NEA has submitted an application to the Department of Electricity Development for approval and is seeking public feedback on environmental and technical aspects.
  • Previous underground transmission projects by NEA in the Ratna Park–Maharajgunj area are complete, with similar projects underway in Kathmandu and Lalitpur.
  • Similar underground transmission line projects in Pokhara and Bharatpur are in the final phase of completion, though past projects have faced delays.
